The word ‘Bharatanatyam’ means a natyam (dance form) that collectively expresses bavam (‘ba’), ragam (‘ra’), and talam (‘ta’). It is claimed that this natyam is the oldest traditional dance form in the country (which is Bharatham). Formerly called ‘Sadiraattam’, this classical dance form originated in Tamil Nadu. Though historic evidence dates back to the 6th century CE, the new name ‘Bharatanatyam’ was coined only in the 1930s.
Learning Bharatanatyam ensures improved emotional and physical health with power, strength, creativity, and focus. As per the Natya Shastra, this dance form comprises three categories.
- Nritta (Nirutham): This is an abstract form that has no story but focuses more on form and sleep.
- Nritya (Niruthiyam): This is a more expressive form with simple storytelling and an informative message passed on.
- Natya (Natyam): This is more of a team play or performance conveying a strong message.
