Basics

  • Goju Ryu karate fundamentals include punches, kicks, blocks, and stances. Training involves
    solo practice in lineups, paired drills, and application-based exercises.
  • Punches (Tsuki Waza):
    1. Jodan Tsuki: High punch (to the nose)
    2. Chudan Tsuki: Middle punch (to the solar plexus)
    3. Gedan Tsuki: Low punch (to the groin)
  • Blocks (Uke Waza):
    1. Jodan Uke: High block
    2. Chudan Uke: Middle block
    3. Gedan Uke: Low block
    4. Yodan Uke: Outer block
    5. Kake Uke: Hooking block
  • Kicks (Keri Waza):
    1. Mae Geri: Front kick
    2. Yoko Geri: Side kick
    3. Mawashi Geri: Roundhouse kick
    4. Ura Mawashi Geri: Reverse Roundhouse kick
    5. Ushiro Geri: Back kick
    6.Hiza Geri: Knee kick
    7.Kansetsu Geri: Joint kick (stamping kick)
    8.Fumikomi Geri: Stomping kick
    9.Mae Ashi Geri: Front leg kick
    10.Tobi Geri: Jumping kick
    11.Ashi Barai: Foot sweep
  • Stances (Dachi):
    1. Musubi Dachi: Attention stance
    2.Heiko Dachi: Parallel stance
    3. Zenkutsu Dachi: Forward stance
    4. Shiko Dachi: Horse stance
    5. Sanchin Dachi: Hourglass stance
    6.Neko Ashi Dachi: Cat stance
    7.Kokutsu Dachi: Back stance

    Kata Jodan

  • 9th Kyu - Yellow Belt to 8th Kyu - Orange Belt
    Kata Yodan
    Kata Jo-Ju-Ke
  • 8th Kyu - Orange Belt to 7th Kyu - Green Belt
    Kihon - 9th Kyu (Basic techniques, stances, punches, and blocks)
  • 7th Kyu - Green Belt to 6th Kyu - Blue Belt
    Gekisai Dai Ichi (Attack & Destroy I) "Geki" means attack, and "Sai" means destroy. "Dai Ichi" means number one. This kata utilizes fundamental stances, punches, and blocks.
  • 6th Kyu - Blue Belt to 5th Kyu - Purple Belt
    Gekisai Dai Ni (Attack & Destroy II) "Dai Ni" means number two. Follows a similar pattern to Gekisai Dai Ichi but introduces open-handed and circular techniques.
  • 5th Kyu - Purple Belt to 4th Kyu - Brown Belt IV
    Saifa (Destroy & Defeat) "Sai" means destroy, and "Fa" means defeat. The first advanced Goju Ryu kata, involving off-line attacks, whipping movements, and sophisticated defenses using body weight.
  • 4TH Kyu - Brown Belt to 3RD Kyu - Brown Belt III
    Sanchin (Three Battles) "San" means three, and "Chin" means battle – representing the battle of mind, body, and spirit.We teach Chojun Miyagi’s version, where the karateka moves forward and then backward without turning.
  • 3RD Kyu - Brown Belt to 2ND Kyu - Brown Belt
    Yke no kata
  • 2ND Kyu - Brown Belt to 1st Kyu - Brown Belt
    Seiyunchin (To Control and Pull in Battle) "Sei" means control, "Yun" means pull, and "Chin" means battle. This kata includes techniques for unbalancing, throwing, and grappling. It incorporates close-quarter striking, sweeps, takedowns, and throws.
  • 1st Kyu - Brown Belt to 1st Dan Black Belt
    Training for the 1st Dan Black Belt involves learning all the katas from Kihon to Seiyunchin and demonstrating them in the belt test. Students must master each form, refine their techniques, and perform with precision in their grading examinations.
